Product Description

Double Ridged Waveguide Calibration Kits for Broadband VNA Measurement

Double Ridged Waveguide Calibration Kits from ADM are precision electromechanical standard sets designed to quantify and remove systematic linear errors — directivity, source match, and reflection tracking — from Vector Network Analyzers operating in double ridged waveguide transmission lines. Unlike rectangular waveguides confined to narrow bands, these kits support multi-octave bandwidths such as 6.5–18 GHz (WRD-650) in a single calibration sweep, machined to ridge gap tolerances of ±0.01 mm and flange flatness below 0.005 mm.

What Are Double Ridged Waveguide Calibration Kits?

Inside each kit, metallic ridges lower the cut-off frequency of the dominant mode, enabling the wide operating bandwidth. The kits follow SSLT (Short-Short-Load-Thru) or TRL (Thru-Reflect-Line) calibration methods. Each standard is dimensionally controlled to deliver accurate error correction coefficients across the full band.

These kits address two practical measurement challenges:

· Band-switching inefficiency — engineers previously had to swap multiple rectangular waveguide setups for broadband testing

· Impedance definition in non-TEM lines — traceable mechanical standards provide repeatable VNA correction across the full operating band

Material Construction

Bodies of Double Ridged Waveguide Calibration Kits are machined from dimensionally stable aluminum alloys or copper, with silver or gold plating applied to minimize skin-depth losses and prevent oxidation that would otherwise alter surface conductivity over time.

Flanges follow the FPWRD series format and comply with MIL-DTL-85 standards. Precision alignment pin holes are built into each flange to prevent ridge misalignment — a misalignment of 0.05 mm can produce a measurable VSWR spike and impedance discontinuity.

Materials are selected for low thermal expansion coefficients, which helps maintain measurement stability when testing inside environmental chambers.

Core Performance Advantages

Calibration with a Single Sweep

With these kits, you can calibrate across the whole operating band in a single sweep, so you don't have to join traces from different rectangular waveguide setups.

Suppression of Higher-Order Modes

The shape of the ridges is meant to block higher-order modes within the working range. This keeps VNA measurements accurate across the whole frequency range.

Set Shorts Aside Instead of Opens

A true open in a waveguide sends out energy like an antenna, which makes the reflection coefficients unstable. When you set offset shorts at exact phase delays (»/8 and 3λ/8), they work like the Smith Chart rotations that are needed to fix all VNA errors without this radiation loss.

Help with TRL Calibration

When the most accurate measurements are needed, metrology-grade kits with precision line shims for TRL and LRL calibration algorithms are the best choice.

Application Scenarios

Electronic Warfare and ECM Validation

The products are used to calibrate VNAs across 6 to 18 GHz in a single sweep, so engineers testing broadband TWT amplifiers and radar warning receivers (RWR) don't have to swap out hardware as often as they would with multiple rectangular waveguide setups.

Measurement of a Near-Field Antenna

To do antenna pattern integration on broadband horn antennas, you need a reference plane that is very clearly defined at the antenna input flange. These kits get rid of the losses caused by cables and adapters at that reference plane. This is especially important in echo-free rooms that are used for checking EMC immunity.

Satellite Multiplexer Tuning

To tune the channel filters in space cargo multiplexers, you need to measure the return loss over a wide dynamic range. Double ridged waveguide calibration kits provide a stable calibration reference at the measurement port, including when temperature drift is a factor during environmental testing.

Quality Control and Inspection

Each kit goes through four inspection steps before shipment.

Dimensional Metrology (CMM Inspection)

Coordinate Measuring Machines are used to check the ridge gap and centring to within 0.01 mm. It has been proven that the flange is flat below 0.005 mm.

Check the Pin Depth and the View

It is checked for ridge scratches or dents on the mating lines. Rotational misalignment makes measurements less accurate, so alignment pins and holes are checked for damage like wear or bending.

Electrical Verification

A VNA is used to check all kits against traceable reference standards. Fixed load return loss must be above 35 dB and short phase variation must be below 1.5 degrees in order to pass.

Checking the Surface Finish

The roughness of the inside wall of the waveguide is checked with a profilometer, and it needs to be Ra ≤ 0.4 µm to keep the conductor loss within the limits.

Recertification and Maintenance

Best practice in the business says that you should get recertified every 12 months. A recertification every six months is suggested for production areas with 20 or more mating rounds per day.

If a kit is dropped or if a visual inspection shows gold-plating damage or ridge deformation, it must be inspected right away. If you find corrupted calibration data early on, it won't affect readings further down the line.

FAQ

Q: Why are offset shorts used instead of open standards?

A: A true open in a waveguide sends out energy like an antenna, which makes the reflection coefficients uncertain. Offset shorts placed at 1/8 and 3/8 wavelength delays act out the Smith Chart phase rotations that are needed for full VNA error correction without radiation loss.

Q: What's the difference between the WRD-650 and the WRD-750?

A: WRD-650 works from 6.5 to 18 GHz, and WRD-750 works from 7.5 to 18 GHz. Their flanges are different sizes, so they can't be used together mechanically. Pressing a link between them will hurt the ridge structures. Match the kit to the band that your device works with.

Q: How does the alignment of the flanges change the error of the measurement?

A: In double-ridged waveguides, electromagnetic fields gather in the space between the ridges. A 0.05 mm misalignment can cause a VSWR spike and an impedance discontinuity that can be seen. Precision indexing pins in ADM kits keep the ridges aligned with each other during every mating cycle.

Q: Can these kits be used to calibrate the TRL?

A: Yes. For TRL to work, the line shim has to be a certain length in relation to the center frequency. Kits made for metrology work with SSLT, TRL, and LRL calibration methods.

Q: How often should a tuning kit be checked again?

A: You should get recertified every year. A 6-month cycle is best for production lines where workers mate 20 times a day or more. After any physical hit or damage that can be seen on the surface, it needs to be inspected right away.

Q: What standards are kept for machining?

A: The ridge gap must be within ±0.01 mm, the flange must be flat within 0.005 mm, the offset short phase must be flat within 0.01 mm, and the inner surface must be Ra ≤ 0.4 µm. This was confirmed by a CMM inspection and a profilometer measurement.
